Storm & home backup

Can a portable generator power my house during an outage?

It can power what matters most: fridge and freezer, sump pump, furnace fan, lights, Wi-Fi and phones. For most homes that’s under 4,500 watts. A whole-home standby system runs $12,000–$20,000 installed; Flex Power portables are $519–$1,399 and ready the day the box arrives.

How do I run my furnace or well pump?

Furnaces and well pumps are hardwired, so they don’t have a plug. A transfer switch or interlock kit, installed once by a licensed electrician, lets your generator feed those circuits safely. Well pumps draw a big surge when they start, so size for that, not just the running watts.

Gas or propane for emergency backup?

Our Dual Fuel models (3300ies, 4500ies and 6500ies Dual Fuel) run on either, using a standard propane cylinder and the included regulator hose. Propane keeps for years without going stale, so it’s easy to have ready for an outage. For gasoline, use 87 octane or higher, ethanol-free if you can get it, and never E15 or E85.

Choosing a size

What size generator do I need?

Add up the running watts of everything you want on at the same time, then add the biggest startup surge. Fridges, pumps and air conditioners spike when they start. Most homes’ outage essentials come in under 4,500 watts. The wattage calculator does the math for you.

Use the wattage calculator →
Can I add more power later?

Yes. Two matching Flex Power generators (two 3300s, two 4500s or two 6500s) can be joined with a parallel kit for more power from one connection. Output stays 120V. Don’t parallel different sizes or other brands.

Quiet, safe & clean power

How quiet is Flex Power compared to Honda?

About the same, with more power for less. The 4500ies measures 57 dB at 23 feet; Honda’s EU3000iS is rated 58 dB. The Flex Power makes 4,500 starting watts to Honda’s 3,000, weighs 76 lbs to Honda’s 131 lbs, and costs about half as much.

See the full comparison →
Is it safe for my fridge, TV and laptop?

Yes. Every Flex Power generator is a true inverter with a clean sine wave under 3% total harmonic distortion (THD). Conventional generators run 15–25% THD, which is hard on the circuit boards in fridges, furnaces, TVs and laptops.

What about carbon monoxide?

Every Flex Power generator has CO auto-shutoff. A sensor watches for carbon monoxide building up and shuts the engine off if levels get unsafe. Always run your generator outdoors, well away from the house, with the exhaust pointed away from doors and windows. Never run it in a garage, even with the door open.
